4-DAY INCA TRAIL FAQs
How difficult is the 4-Day Inca Trail?
The trek is considered moderate to challenging. You do not need to be an expert hiker, but a good baseline of fitness is essential. The biggest challenges are the high altitude and the steep ascents and descents, particularly on Day 2 when you cross Dead Woman's Pass (approx 4,215 meters / approx 13,800 feet).
Do I need a permit and how far in advance should I book?
Yes, a permit is mandatory. Access is strictly limited to 500 people per day (including guides and porters). Permits can sell out 6 to 8 months in advance, especially for high season dates (May–September). Booking 6+ months ahead is non-negotiable.
Is the Inca Trail open all year round?
No. The Inca Trail is closed every February for essential conservation, maintenance, and cleaning. Tours run from March to January.
How long is the hike in total?
The classic 4-Day Inca Trail covers approximately 43 kilometers (26 miles) of ancient Inca stone pathways, divided into hiking days of roughly 6 to 9 hours each.
What is the best time of year to hike the Inca Trail?
The Dry Season (May to October) is generally recommended, offering clearer skies. However, it is also the high season for tourism. May and September often strike a good balance between dry weather and slightly fewer crowds.
Will I suffer from altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness is common but manageable. The best prevention is acclimatization. You must spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco (approx 3,400m) or the Sacred Valley before starting your trek to allow your body to adjust.
What is the accommodation like on the trail?
Accommodation is camping only. Porters set up tents at designated campsites each night. You will typically sleep on a ground mat (often foam, or an inflatable mat if rented) inside a three-season sleeping bag. Showers are extremely rare, usually limited to a cold shower at one campsite.
What happens to my main luggage during the trek?
Your main suitcase/baggage can be stored securely at your hotel in Cusco for free. You will only carry a small daypack (water, camera, warm layers). Your sleeping bag, tent, and personal belongings (up to a set weight limit) are carried by the agency's porters.
What essential gear should I bring?
Key items are broken-in hiking boots with ankle support, layered clothing (including thermal layers), a quality waterproof jacket/poncho, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a headlamp. Walking poles are highly recommended to reduce strain on your knees.
What kind of food is served on the trail?
You will be accompanied by a dedicated cook who prepares delicious, substantial, and nutritious three-course meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) using local and fresh ingredients. Dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) can be accommodated if requested upon booking.
Can I hire a porter to carry my daypack?
The base tour price generally includes a porter service to carry communal gear and a portion of your personal items (typically 5–7 kg). If you wish to carry less, you can hire an extra private porter for an additional fee.
